À seulement 19 ans, il entre dans l’histoire comme le plus jeune Konzertmeister de l’Orchestre du Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam, avant de se tourner vers la direction d’orchestre en 1996. En 1997, Jaap van Zweden et son épouse fondent la Fondation Papageno, dédiée au soutien des familles d’enfants autistes grâce à des initiatives innovantes de musicothérapie et à des programmes communautaires plus larges.

Jaap van Zweden is Music Director-Designate of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and Music Director of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. Among his past music directorships are the New York Philharmonic, where his tenure included 31 premieres and the reopening of David Geffen Hall, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic, which was named Gramophone’s Orchestra of the Year under his leadership. He has conducted leading orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Staatskapelle Berlin, London Symphony, Boston Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, and Los Angeles Philharmonic, among others. In 2025/26 he begins touring with Radio France in Europe and Asia, with performances in Amsterdam, Vienna, and Tokyo. A winner of the Concertgebouw Prize and Musical America’s 2012 Conductor of the Year, he began his career as the youngest-ever concertmaster of Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. With his wife, he founded the Papageno Foundation, supporting young people with autism through music, housing, research, and innovation.
